This Chippendale mirror was reproduced from an original in the Colonial Williamsburg collection. Of a style popular in the mid 18th Century, it was known as a “pier-glass” and would have been hung in the architectural spaces on either side of a window or door then called the “pier.” The frame’s elaborate pierced work, ruffled C scrolls, acanthus leaf festoons, and gilded finish reflect classic Rococo style at its best. A fanciful and boldly asymmetrical phoenix poised for flight crowns the mirror. An ancient Egyptian symbol of resurrection, the mythical phoenix rises on spread wings from the fire and ashes of a lost civilization. Finished in antique gold leaf. Made in America.
Measures 26″ w x 59″ h.
